Surgery Journal: What Were Red Sox Thinking When They Got Eric Gagne? by acomdata (12/30/2011)

Asked by: 74 views Surgery Journal

I mean, they trade a promising RHP Gabbard for a relief pitcher who was awesome a few years, but wasn’t the same after all his surgeries. And in 7 games he allowed 10 runs and cost us 3 or 4 games. I’m sure he’ll single-handedly turn our once-dominant bullpen into an average one. I guess I’m overreacting, but his ERA for Boston is 15.00!! I mean, come on, Tavarez or Snyder could have done better.

They were thinking that the needed him for two reasons. First, to bolster their bullpen. They wanted Gagne to form a lefty-righty combination with Okijima to get to Papelbon. Second, they got him to keep him away from the Yankees, who refused to trade Hughes, Chamberlain, or Cabrera for him. I’d say that was a wise decision. I think maybe Gagne is one of those pitchers who does not do well under the microscope, which he is under in Boston.

He stinks right now but He’s a really another strong arm who will come in handy later. Gabbard isn’t that great of a prospect even though he was doing alright with the sox so they sold high and got a pretty good deal. I think Gagne will round into form come October and will eventually be worth it.

I know it is frustrating right now but I belive Gagne will settle down. It is just a matter of when – a lot could change in a month or so

    They were thinking he’d be a good set-up man…..???

Not like they could predict how he was gonna do
Plus he was pretty fucking good with Texas

But then again as a Yankee fan I’m loving it…..I hope he does this shitty the rest of the year HAHA!

Nearly every playoff contender was calling the Texas Rangers about Eric Gagne. How could you not want a relief pitcher with a 2.16 ERA, 34 saves and Major League experience. Knowing how dominate he’d been in the past and seeing how well he was doing this year, why not. Although it hasn’t worked out currently for the Red Sox, I still think the made the right decision.

Remember every trade is a risk, but this was a risk worth taking.

I guess they thought the Okajima-Papelbon battery would struggle somewhere down the stretch. Another reason is sometimes you give your team a boost (morale) by making a big draft day trade, but that didn’t quite materialize either. A rare bad call on Theo’s part.

They were thinking they are now gonna run away with it!! They had a great bullpen before that. As a Yankees fan, I wanted Eric Gagne based on the stats he piled up. But, AL hitters are far more dangerous than most NL hitters. I guess even the genius Theo Epstein makes a mistake.

I have no idea what Boston was thinking when they picked up Gagne! They weren’t in any need of a closer. They have Papelbon and Okajima in the bullpen. Why even bother with Gagne? To me, picking him up was a HUGE risk. Who knows if he’ll ever be as dominant as he once was. It’s obvious he’s struggling to get back into the groove (i.e. last night’s game). I heard Gagne said he only wants to be a closer. Not a middle/set-up guy. If that’s the case, then that may create some tension in the bullpen.
